Viet Nam 1966
Richard was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her
know how much those shows meant to lonely GI's so far from home. Ann
Margaret came out looking as beautiful as ever and, as second in line,
it was soon Richard's turn.

SOME GAVE ALL
I have no idea
who put this together, but, it's wonderful!! Long ago and far away, in a land that time
forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot. There
lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me, For Ike was in the White House in that land
where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton
Place was porn. We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our
hair at dawn, We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the
lawn We longed for love and romance, and waited
for our Prince, And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen
him since.. We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to
'Stagger Lee' And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me
, Me.
Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was
one too many, And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean
McKinney. And only in our wildest dreams did we
expect to see A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That
Made Me , Me. We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh,
so nice, And when they made a movie, they never made it twice. We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho
Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me ,
Me. Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester
had a limp, And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a
chimp. We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr.. T, And
Oprah couldn't talk, yet, in the Land That Made Me ,
Me. We had our share of heroes, we never
thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe. For youth was still eternal, and life was
yet to be, And Elvis was forever in the Land That! Made Me ,
Me. We'd never seen the rock band that was
Grateful to be Dead, And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and
Zeppelins were not Led. And Beatles lived in gardens then, and
Monkees lived in trees, Madonna was a virgin in the Land That
Made Me , Me. We'd never heard of microwaves, or
telephones in cars, And babies might be bottle-fed, but they
weren't grown in jars And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and
'gay' meant fancy-free, And dorms were never coed in the Land
That Made Me , Me. We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about
the lag, And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the
bag. And Hardware was a box of nails, and bytes
came from a flea, And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That
Made Me , Me. Buicks came with portholes, and side shows
came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover
both your cheeks. And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts
below the knee, And Castro came to power near the Land That Made
Me , Me. We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no
Hill Street Blues, We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton
herbal tea Or prime-time ads
for condoms in the Land That Made Me ,
Me. There
were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill, And fish were
not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill. And middle-aged was 35 and old was
forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made
Me , Me. But all things have a season, or so we've
heard them say, And now instead of Maybelline we swear by
Retin-A. They send us invitations to
join AARP, We've come a long way, baby, from the Land !
That &nbs p; Made Me ,
Me. So now we face a brave new world in
slightly larger jeans, And wonder why they're using smaller
print in magazines. And we tell our children's children of the
way it used to be, Long ago and far away in
the Land That Made Me ,
Me.

This is a good counter balance story to the Jane Fonda 'Vietnam'
Woman Of The Year story I have received many times in my e-mail.

Richard, (my husband), never really talked a lot about his time in Viet
Nam other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather
grainy, 8 x 10 black and white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann
Margaret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures.
A few years ago, Ann Margaret was doing a book signing at a local
bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the
treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o'clock for the
7:30 signing.
When I got there after work, the line went all the way a round the
bookstore, circled the parking lot and disappeared behind a parking
garage. Before her appearance, bookstore employees announced that she
would sign only her book and no memorabilia would be permitted.

He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo.
When he did, there were many shouts from the employees that she would
not sign it. Richard said, "I understand. I just wanted her to see it."
She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she
said, "This is one of my gentlemen from Viet Nam and I most certainly
will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I
always have time for 'my gentlemen.'"
![]()
With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on
him. She then made quite a to-do about the bravery of the young men she
met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she
appreciated them. There weren't too many dry eyes among those close
enough to hear She then posed for pictures and acted as if he were the
only one there.
Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he'd like to
talk about it, my big strong husband broke down in tears. "That's the
first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army," he said.
That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter
and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I'll
never forget Ann Margaret for her graciousness and how much that small
act of kindness meant to my husband.
I now make it a point to say "Thank you" to every person I come across
who served in our Armed Forces. Freedom does not co me cheap and I am
grateful for all those who have served their country.
If you'd like to pass on this story, feel free to do so. Perhaps it will
help others to become aware of how important it is to acknowledge the
contribution our service people make.

Sung by Billy Ray Cyrus![]()
I knew a man, called him Sandy Kane
Few folks even knew his name
But a hero, yes was he
Left a boy, came back a man
Still many just don't understand
About the reasons we are free.
I can't forget the look in his eyes
Or the tears he cries
As he said these words to me.
All gave some, some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
Some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all.
Now Sandy Kane is no longer here
But his words are oh so clear
As they echo through out our land
For all his friends who gave us all
Who stood the ground and took the fall
To help their fellow man.
Love your country and live with pride
And don't forget those who died.
America can't you see.
All gave some and some gave all
Some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall
Some gave all.
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall, yes recall
Some gave all.
Some gave all..........
